Lagarosiphon oxygen weed
(Lagarosiphon major)
Family: Hydrocharitaceae
Description:
Lagarosiphon is a rhizomatous, perennial, submerged aquatic herb with spiralled leaves on slender to almost woody stems. It has tiny pink flowers in summer. The leaves of Lagarosiphon curl right back on themselves.
Other names:
Elodea crispa, Lagarosiphon muscoides, lake weed, oxygen weed.
Values at risk:
Recreational, ecological and aesthetic values, particularly on ponds, lakes and reservoirs.
Strategy rule:

There is no rule requiring you to control lagarosiphon oxygen weed. Any control is voluntary.

What is the 'Pest Management Strategy' for Taranaki?

How to destroy:

Hand pull small isolated infestations. For larger infestations, a diver-operated Venturi pump is the preferred method of control. Take extreme care to minimise any disturbance and collect and dispose of any broken shoots.

Use a herbicide. Diquat (eg Reglone) is a herbicide recommended and approved for use in waterways. Click on the link below for information on how it must be used.
