Common name: Egmont red tussock Botanical name: Chinochloa rubra var. inermis
Family: Gramineae (=Poaceae) Maximum height: 1.5 metres

 

Where found:

  • Mt Taranaki/Egmont tussock grassland and bogs from 900 - 1500 metres above sea level
Description:
  • A red brown tussock
  • Rigid, arching rolled leaves, greenish leaf blades 1m long x 1-4mm wide, easily split if bent backwards
  • The flower stalks are the same length as the leaves
  • This variety is endemic to Taranaki
