Common name: Native broom Botanical name: Carmichaelia australis
Family: Fabaceae Maximum height: 2 metres

 

Where found:

  • Sub alpine scrub, Taranaki/Mt Egmont between 1100 metres and 1400 metres above sea level
Description:
  • Similar to the introduced broom
  • Green branchlets 1-3 mm wide perform the functions of the leaves
  • Leaves made up of 3-5 leaflets, each 8 x5 mm
  • Flowers are white to pale purple
  • Seed pods are black, 9-11mm long x 4-6 mm wide, enclosing usually 4 orange-red seeds 2 mm in diameter
