| Description: |
- In the open the tree forms a tight, bushy, round-topped crown,
but is more open in a forest situation. Can live to more than
100 years old.
- Thick shiny leaves, yellow-green on upper surface and paler
underneath, 50-100 mm long by 20-50 mm wide, oval shape with rounded
apex, supported by stout petioles (leaf stalks) 10-20 mm long.
Distinct vein pattern on upper surfaces.
- Male and female flowers occur on separate trees (dioecious)
with greenish coloured petals. Occur in panicles from the leaf
axils during October to December which are 2-4mm in diameter.
Ripe fruits are single celled with one seed, 6-10 mm long and
purple-black in colour and remain on the tree from December to
August. Propagation by seed.
- Blistery and furrowed, grey-brown bark.
- Bird food (grey warbler, kereru)
- Tolerance: drought-moderate, poor fertility-moderate, frost-high,
wind-high, salt-high.
