Family: Sapindaceae (soap-berry family) Maximum height: 10 metres

 

Where found:

  • Coastal and lowland forests
  • River flats
  • Up to 600 metres
Description:
  • Spreading tree sometimes called 'NZ oak'
  • Leaves are 10-40cm consisting of 4-6 pairs of alternate leaflets. Leaflets are 5-10cm long x 2-5cm wide. The margins are sharply toothed.
  • Tiny flowers are unisexual, dark red and in panicles up to 30cm long
  • Very distinctive seeds, glossy black and partly embedded in a scarlet fleshy fruit enclosed in a woody seed capsule
