Where found:

  • Sparse in lowland to lower montane forest of inland Taranaki
  • Up to 450 metres
  • Leached soils, well-drained (often with beeches)
Description:
  • A semi-parasitic small tree with slender branches and a trunk up to 20cm in diameter
  • Long narrow leaf blades (5-10cm x 3-10mm), dark green glossy leaves with smooth margins, the leaves can be alternate or sub opposite pairs
  • Greenish flowers, 4-6mm
  • Bright red fruit, 12mm long
  • Rough grey bark
