- Sea level to 920m.
- Well-drained/fertile site
- Mature forest/regenerating forest/forest margins.

| Description: |
- Inside the forest it grows with a slender, straight trunk, but
along the forest margins and in the open it forms a tight much-branched
tree from the ground upwards.
- Wavy margined, silvery-green, glossy leaves.
- The flowers are either male or female on separate trees or together
on the same tree. The reddish-purple flowers turn black as they
age and are sweet-scented at dusk.
- Grey and blistered bark on old trees.
- Seeds provide bird food in late autumn
- Tolerant of frost/wind. Won't tolerate water logging or extreme
draught. Possum hardy nurse tree, prunes well for a shade tree,
screen or hedge.
