Where found:
  • Sea level to 920m.
  • Well-drained/fertile site
  • Mature forest/regenerating forest/forest margins.
Description:
  • Inside the forest it grows with a slender, straight trunk, but along the forest margins and in the open it forms a tight much-branched tree from the ground upwards.
  • Wavy margined, silvery-green, glossy leaves.
  • The flowers are either male or female on separate trees or together on the same tree. The reddish-purple flowers turn black as they age and are sweet-scented at dusk.
  • Grey and blistered bark on old trees.
  • Seeds provide bird food in late autumn
  • Tolerant of frost/wind. Won't tolerate water logging or extreme draught. Possum hardy nurse tree, prunes well for a shade tree, screen or hedge.
