Where found:

  • Common in lowland to lower montane forest
Description:
  • Much branched shrub
  • Leaves shiny, toothed or lobed. 5-15cm x 2-5cm often with crimson blotches
  • Flowers are crimson and fragrant 2.5-4cm long
  • Berries are oblong and crimson 8-12mm long
  • Favoured by goats and severely depleted in Egmont National Park by browsing at the height of goat numbers in the 1960's. Also highly palatable to possums
