  • Lowland to lower montane forests
  • Up to 2750 metres
Description:
  • Shrub or small tree, branching and upright form
  • Dark green leaves (6-10cm x 3-6cm) with glossy surfaces which have pin like glands, the leaves taste spicy/peppery
  • Flowers (1cm diameter) are greenish yellow with five petals, growing in groups of 3-10 off the branchlets, they have a faint aroma
  • Small red fruit (5-6mm) with 3-6 black seeds
  • Red bark and dark red wood
  • Used by Maori for medical properties, often for stomach ache and toothache
