Family: Gramineae (Poaceae) Maximum height: 300 mm

 

Where found:

  • Coastal - sand dunes
Description:
  • An important indigenous sand binding grass
  • A stem which runs along the ground with shoots along it (stoloniferous), often forms colonies 80-160 metres long
  • Much branched, knotted, rope-like, hard, creeping flower stalks
  • Silky-hairy leaves 300 mm x 1.5 mm, silvery green in colour
  • Tiny white flowers - male and female plants separate (dioecious)
  • On female plants, the seed heads are spiky balls often seen blowing along the beach in February/March
  • Preferred plant for foredune restoration in New Plymouth
