Family: Lauraceae (Laurel family) Maximum height: 12 metres

 

Where found:

  • Coastal forests in the north of Taranaki, Southern limit near Uruti
  • Up to 600 metres
  • Favours rich soils
Description:
  • Much branched small tree with a trunk up to 80cm diameter with a spreading crown when growing in the open, more upright in the forest
  • Oval leaves are leathery with wavy margins (50-125 mm x 30-50 mm)
  • Sweet scented yellowish flowers; dioecious
  • Drupes 15-20 mm long are a purple colour
  • Dark brown bark on which lichens often grow
