Where found:
  • Sea level to 950 m.
  • Tolerates well-drained, poor soils
  • Mature forest/regenerating forest/forest margins and stream sides.
Description:
  • Shrub or small tree with upright branches.
  • The alternate, thick, leathery wavy leaves are 5-7 cm long, up to 10 cm and up to 2.5 cm wide.
  • The scented flowers are 12 mm across and occur from September to December with the seed capsules, 2-3 cm across, ripening during the following August-December.
  • Smooth grey bark
  • Seeds provide bird food.
  • Tolerant of frost/wind/salt Environmental Tolerances - key
  • Hardy, but not easy to establish in heavy wet soils. Grows in sand, prunes well, possum-hardy. Shelter or nurse tree.
