- Sea level to coastal but also found inland in lowland forests
(range probably extended by Maori plantings), shade tolerant

| Description: |
- Leafy canopy tree with spreading branches, fast growth of 1m
per year.
- Leaves are thick, dark green on upper and slightly paler on
lower surfaces, leathery, 100-150 mm long by 50-70 mm wide, elliptic
to oblong with smooth margins.
- White to pale green flower 4-5mm diameter.
- Orange berry 25 to 40 mm long known as kopi by Maori. Large
numbers produced in late summer and autumn. Best propagated by
seed which are best collected off the ground and their flesh removed.
- Trunk up to 600 mm in diameter.
- Fruit flesh eaten by kereru.
- Tolerance: salt-high, wind hight, drought-moderate, frost-low,
waterlogging-low
