Family: Scrophulariaceae (Figwort family) Maximum height: 1-2 metres

 

Where found:

  • Mokau sea cliffs, uncommon
Description:
  • A rounded bushy shrub with stout branches
  • Dark green leaves which are large (50-100 mm x 25-50 mm), leathery, glossy and fleshy, the margin and the midrib are reddish
  • The tubular flowers are purple or magenta occurring on lateral spikes with a mass crowded at the branch tip, flowering from January to October
  • One of the few brightly flowering shrubs of New Zealand, now commonly cultivated
