Taranaki is known for its fresh green environment. A huge variety of plants grow in our temperate climate and rich soils. While the regions economic strength is based on its highly productive farmland, our native forests, coastal plants and prolific gardens help enrich the Taranaki lifestyle. Taranaki's landscape changed as natural forest was cleared and developed for agriculture. A variety of plants have been introduced to the region - some for agricultural production and others that are now unwelcome pests. Plants are an important
part of our environment. This plant collection (or herbarium) includes
some of the more common or important plants found in the Taranaki region.
The list of plants is by no means complete and is designed as an educational
resource to introduce users to the types of native and introduced plants
found in Taranaki. Taranaki
