Where found:

  • Shelter or specimen.
  • Sea level to 250 metres.
  • Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions including low fertility. Prefers sandy, well drained soil.
Description:
  • Upright pyramidal tree. Branches grow horizontally in a tiered fashion and it is nearly always symmetrical, even in windy positions.
  • Dark green leathery leaves, 5 to 9 millimetres and spirally arranged or overlapping.
  • Male pollen cone is cylindrical, female is ovoid. Rounded cones, 9 to 13 centimetres in diameter, grow towards the top of the tree.
  • Dark grey/brown bark peeling in thin flakes, elastic, deep pink beneath.
  • Exremely hardy to coastal winds and salt spray. Tolerant of minor frosts, although seedlings are frost tender and require protection when young.
