Where found:

  • Sea level to 250 metres.
  • Farms and gardens for shelter.
  • Tolerates a wide range of soils including peat, but prefers deep, well drained soil with adequate moisture.
Description:
  • Upright medium-growing graceful tree with slightly spreading habit. Pendulous branches can be trimmed for shelter. Evergreen.
  • Leaves are deep green drooping needles.
  • Produces small reddish brown flower. Male catkins and female flowers occur on separate trees. Develops 1 centimetre cones, ovoid, woody and yellow-brown.
  • Hard furrowed dark grey bark with a pinkish tinge. It has small white blisters when the tree is young.
  • Tolerates most conditions including wind and moderate coastal situations. Slightly frost tender. One of a number of she-oak species - some very drought tolerant.
  • Moderate potential for timber.
